Use finger circumference or the inner diameter of a ring that already fits.
Cut a narrow strip that can sit flat around the base of the finger. Avoid thick cord because it can add extra length.
It should be snug but not tight. Make sure the loop can still pass over the knuckle if your knuckle is wider than the finger base.
Mark the overlap point, flatten the strip, and measure the length in millimetres. Enter it as finger circumference (mm).
Take two or three readings at a normal room temperature and use the most consistent value.
Use a round ring that already fits the exact finger for which you are buying the new ring.
Place the ring on a ruler and measure straight across the inner opening at the widest point. Do not include the metal band.

A correctly fitted ring should sit securely at the base of the finger without leaving a deep mark. You should feel light resistance when pulling it back over the knuckle, but you should not need force or soap to remove it during normal conditions.
If the ring rotates constantly, slides off when your hand points downward, or can be removed with almost no knuckle resistance, it is probably too loose. If the finger becomes numb, changes colour, develops a deep groove, or the ring is difficult to remove when your hands are at a normal temperature, it is too tight.
When your result falls almost exactly between two Indian sizes, comfort usually matters more than a perfect numerical match. For daily-wear rings, a slightly roomier fit is often easier to live with, especially in warm weather. For top-heavy solitaire or gemstone rings, however, excessive looseness can make the setting spin.
