Ring sizing becomes confusing because India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Japan do not all label the same physical ring with the same number or letter.
The safest way to compare systems is to keep one physical measurement in the middle of the process: inside diameter or inside circumference. Those millimetre measurements make it possible to compare an Indian size with an approximate US, UK, EU or Japanese equivalent without assuming that matching numbers represent matching rings.

The straight distance across the empty inner opening of a ring. Do not measure the outside edges of the metal.

Indian Size Label
An Indian number is a local size label. Treat the millimetre measurements in the same row as the best cross-check.

India
Indian charts commonly use numbered sizes. Because retailer tables can differ slightly, keep the associated diameter or circumference with the size number.
US / Canada
US and Canadian charts generally use numbers with half and sometimes quarter increments. A US number should never be matched directly to the same Indian number.
UK / Australia
The UK/Australian convention commonly uses letters and half-letter steps. Physical measurements make letter-to-number conversion much easier to verify.
EU / ISO-style
European size numbers are often closely related to inner circumference in millimetres, which is why this system can be intuitive for measurement-first comparison.
Japan
Japanese ring sizes use a separate numbering scale. Use a published physical measurement to connect Japanese sizes with Indian or Western systems.
Inside diameter
Measure from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge through the centre. A rigid ruler or digital caliper is better than estimating from the outer band.
Inside circumference
Mathematically, circumference is approximately diameter × π. Published charts may round values, so small differences between calculated and listed figures are normal.
Millimetres are easier to compare
Small ring-size changes are easier to see in millimetres. Keep at least one decimal place until you have finished comparing chart rows.

1. Start with a physical measurement whenever possible
International conversion is most reliable when you know the ring's inner diameter or circumference. A physical measurement is independent of the country label, so it acts as a common reference between systems.
2. Do not match the same number across countries
An Indian size 8 is not automatically a US size 8, and a Japanese size 12 is not automatically an Indian size 12. The systems were built on different scales. Always keep the country or system name attached to the size.
3. Expect nearest equivalents rather than perfect matches
One system may use increments that land between two sizes in another system. In that case, a conversion table chooses the nearest practical equivalent. That is why different reputable charts can occasionally differ by a half step or a local size.
4. Use the retailer's chart as the final commercial reference
A general ring size chart is excellent for understanding and cross-checking, but the ring you buy is produced and labelled by a specific manufacturer. When their chart includes millimetres, compare those measurements with your own before checkout.
Narrow bands
