Use a ring that feels comfortable and passes over the knuckle without excessive force.
Keep the ring level so the inside opening is easy to see and measure.
Measure straight through the centre from one inside edge to the opposite inside edge. Do not include the ring's metal thickness.
Keep one decimal place if possible. A digital caliper is ideal when the ring sits between ruler markings.
Use paper or another non-stretch material. Elastic string can tighten and produce a smaller reading.
Keep the strip snug but not tight. The fit should be similar to how you want the finished ring to feel.

Diameter is the straight-line distance across the inside of a circular ring opening. When you measure a ring that already fits, this is usually the easiest value to obtain. The measurement must be taken from inner edge to inner edge. If you accidentally measure the outside of the ring, the metal thickness is added and the result can convert to an Indian size that is several steps too large.
Circumference is the distance around the finger. It is usually obtained with a paper strip, ring-sizing tape or finger gauge. A circumference value is much larger than the diameter for the same ring. For example, an inner diameter around 16 mm corresponds to a circumference a little above 50 mm. This is why the converter asks you to identify the measurement type before calculation.
For a perfect circle, circumference is approximately diameter multiplied by ฯ. Real rings may be slightly oval, comfort-fit, decorative or affected by manufacturing tolerance, so a direct physical measurement and seller chart are preferable to repeatedly converting rounded values.
The same person's left and right ring fingers can differ. Do not assume a measurement transfers perfectly from one hand to the other.
Cold hands can measure smaller and hot or swollen hands can measure larger. Aim for a normal everyday condition.
Three consistent readings are stronger evidence than one quick ruler check. Investigate any large variation before converting.
A difference of a few tenths of a millimetre matters near a size boundary. Avoid rounding to a whole millimetre too early.

For wedding rings and engagement rings, also check band width and resizing policy before purchase. A thin ring and a broad ring with the same inside circumference can feel different on the finger. Rings with stones around the full band, complex patterns, some tension settings and certain materials may also be harder to resize, so sizing confidence matters more before checkout.

A 52 mm circumference entered as a 52 mm diameter is far outside normal ring dimensions. Always select the measurement type first.
Outer diameter includes metal thickness and is not the ring opening that determines fit. Use inside edge to inside edge.
Elastic thread can lengthen while wrapped around the finger. A paper strip or proper sizing tape gives a more stable circumference.
