Use circumference for a finger, or inside diameter for a ring that already fits that finger.
Wrap a narrow non-stretch paper strip around the base of the finger, mark where it overlaps, lay it flat and measure the marked length in millimetres. This gives finger circumference.
Choose a ring that fits the exact finger. Measure straight across the inside opening from inner edge to inner edge. Do not include the metal thickness.

Measure the base where the ring will sit, then measure around the widest part of the knuckle. A ring must be large enough to pass the knuckle but not so loose that it spins constantly once it reaches the base.
