Typical Engagement Ring Size Ranges by Finger

• 🌅Measure in the evening — fingers naturally swell throughout the day and after physical activity.
• 🌡️Avoid measuring with cold hands — cold fingers are narrower and will give you a smaller reading than your true size.
• 📐If you fall between two sizes, always choose the larger one for day-to-day comfort.
• 🔁Measure both hands separately — the dominant hand is often half to one Indian size larger.
• 💎Wide engagement-ring bands, stacked bands and some bridal sets can feel tighter — if the band is substantially wider than the ring used for measuring, consider sizing up after confirming with the jeweller.
• 🎁Planning a surprise proposal? Borrow a ring worn on the same ring finger and measure its inner diameter. A measured ring is far more reliable than guessing from an average size.
• ☀️In India's hot summers, fingers can swell by 0.5–1 size — factor this in for year-round comfortable wear.
• 📏Measure at least 3 times and average the results for the most accurate reading.
• 🔧Before ordering, check the specific jeweller’s resizing policy. Solitaire settings are often resizable, while full-eternity, tension and some intricate pavé designs may have tighter resizing limits.

A correctly sized engagement ring should feel secure without squeezing the finger. It should slide over the knuckle with light resistance, sit comfortably at the base of the finger, and need a small twist to remove. Because engagement rings often carry a raised centre stone, an overly loose fit can cause the setting to rotate toward the palm.

For a surprise proposal, the best method is to measure a ring your partner already wears on the same finger and same hand. Place it on a flat surface and measure the inside opening straight across from inner edge to inner edge. Enter that diameter in the calculator above.

• 💍Borrow the right ring: a ring from the right-hand ring finger may not match the left-hand ring finger exactly.
• 📷Trace or photograph carefully: if you cannot keep the ring, place it over a ruler and take a clear top-down photo showing the inner diameter.
• 👭Ask someone close: a sibling or close friend may know the size or can casually arrange a jewellery-store visit.
• ⚠️Avoid average-size guessing: averages can be useful as a last resort, but an actual measurement is much safer for an expensive engagement ring.

Many engagement rings can be resized after purchase, but the safe adjustment depends on the metal, setting, stone placement and how far the size must move. Plain gold or platinum shanks are generally easier for a skilled jeweller to adjust than full-eternity, tension-set or highly detailed bands.

Before paying a deposit, ask the seller whether resizing is included, how many sizes the exact design can move, whether engraving affects the service, and whether resizing changes the warranty.
