The scanner does not claim to identify finger size from pixels alone. It first needs a known-width object in the same photo. That reference converts the on-screen guide distance into millimetres, after which the tool produces an approximate ring-size match.
A photo has pixels, not millimetres. The scanner therefore needs a known-width object. A standard ID-1 payment or identification card is convenient because its nominal width is 85.60 mm under ISO/IEC 7810. When the two gold guides are placed on the card edges, the tool can estimate how many on-screen pixels represent one millimetre at that camera distance.
The blue guides define the visible width of the finger where the ring will sit. The tool converts that guide distance from pixels to millimetres using the card calibration. This is why the card and finger must be next to each other and at the same distance from the camera lens.
A finger is not a perfect circle. The scanner treats the finger cross-section as an oval for estimation, using a conservative geometric profile rather than assuming that the visible width equals the inside diameter of a ring. That produces an equivalent diameter that can be compared with a standard ring-size table.
Finally, the equivalent diameter is compared with the Indian size chart from size 1 through 26. The closest listed diameter becomes the displayed estimate. Because photo perspective, finger tissue and knuckle shape can change the result, the output should be treated as a starting point rather than a final purchase measurement.
A camera-based finger scanner can be useful for estimating a likely size range, but it cannot reproduce the pressure and three-dimensional fit of a physical jeweller's sizing gauge. Camera angle, lens distortion, shadows, distance mismatch between the finger and reference card, swollen fingers, wide knuckles and ring-band width can each shift the estimate.
For a casual fashion ring, a good photo estimate may be enough to narrow your choice. For engagement rings, wedding bands, platinum rings, eternity rings, tension settings or expensive custom jewellery, verify the size physically before purchase. GIA's professional guidance recommends appropriate finger-sizing gauges and also notes that wider rings require special consideration because they fit differently from narrow bands.

Finger sizes differ between hands and between fingers. Do not scan the left ring finger if the ring will be worn on the right hand.
Do not spread or squeeze the finger. Place the hand naturally on a flat surface so the base of the finger is clearly visible.
The card and finger should be side by side, not one closer to the camera. A distance mismatch is one of the biggest sources of scale error.

Measure the base of the finger where the ring will rest, not the widest part of the knuckle. The ring still has to pass over the knuckle, so verify that separately.
The main challenge in measuring anything from a photograph is scale. A finger that appears 120 pixels wide could be small and close to the camera or large and far away. A known-size reference fixes that problem. ISO/IEC 7810 defines physical characteristics for identification cards; the widely used ID-1 format is 85.60 mm ร 53.98 mm. This makes an everyday card a convenient calibration reference for an estimation tool.
You do not need to show any sensitive card details. Use the back of an expired, blank, membership-style or non-sensitive card if you prefer. Only the physical edge-to-edge width matters. Keep numbers, names and security details covered. If you choose a custom reference object, enter its real width in millimetres and make sure that dimension is known accurately.

The scanner measures the visible finger width at the intended ring position, but a ring also has to pass over the knuckle. If your knuckle is much wider than the base of your finger, a size that looks perfect at the base can still be difficult to put on or remove. In that situation, compare the scanner estimate with a physical sizing gauge and discuss sizing beads or other fit options with a jeweller.
Wide bands are another special case. GIA's quality-assurance guidance distinguishes between narrow sizing gauges and wide-band gauges because band width changes perceived fit. The scanner therefore shows a wide-band warning rather than pretending that one fixed automatic adjustment is correct for every ring.
Full-eternity rings, tension settings, tungsten, ceramic and some highly detailed rings can be difficult or impossible to resize after purchase. For those styles, treat the camera result as a shortlist and obtain a professional final measurement before ordering.
