Measure the small clearance from the finger edge to the inside wall of the ring on one side. The calculator doubles this to estimate total diameter clearance.
Put the ring on the exact finger you want to evaluate. Let your hand rest for a few minutes instead of measuring immediately after exercise, heat exposure or cold water.
The ring should sit around the base of the finger without being pushed hard against one side. Do not intentionally stretch the skin or pull the ring away from the finger to create a larger gap.
Use a thin millimetre ruler, narrow paper strip, feeler-style strip, or a carefully marked piece of paper. Measure only the actual free space. If you measure one side, select the one-side option in the calculator.
Ring position and finger shape can change the reading. Repeat the measurement and use the most consistent value rather than a single unusual reading.
A ring can have extra clearance at the finger base but still need enough diameter to pass over the knuckle. Never downsize solely from the gap if the current ring already struggles to pass the knuckle.
Little or no measurable gap. A ring can still be too tight even when the calculator cannot detect negative clearance, especially if it leaves a deep mark or is difficult to remove.
A small amount of clearance can allow normal movement while still keeping the ring secure. The ideal amount varies with finger shape, band width and personal preference.
A larger gap, frequent spinning, or a ring that slides over the knuckle with almost no resistance can indicate that the ring should be checked for downsizing or a temporary sizing aid.

A common problem with ring fit is that the wearer can describe the ring as “a little loose” but cannot quantify how loose it is. A gap measurement gives you a repeatable number in millimetres. That number still needs interpretation, but it is more useful than relying only on whether the ring spins once or twice during the day. Every ring size in the reference table has an approximate inner diameter and circumference. When you tell the calculator that your current ring has, for example, a certain inner diameter and that there is measurable free space between the ring and finger, the tool subtracts that clearance from the ring diameter. It then adds a small target clearance based on whether you want a snug, everyday comfortable or relaxed fit. Finally, it finds the nearest Indian size in the table. This is a geometric estimate, not a direct scan of your finger.
The distinction is important. A one-side radial gap describes the space from one edge of the finger to the inside ring wall. If the finger is approximately centred, there may be similar clearance on the opposite side. The calculator therefore doubles a one-side reading. A total gap is already the combined diameter difference, so it is used directly. If you are unsure which you measured, use one-side gap when the ruler or strip was inserted on only one side of the finger.
After estimating finger diameter, the calculator adds a small fit allowance. A snug target uses less clearance, everyday comfort uses a moderate allowance, and relaxed fit uses more. Wide bands receive a small additional allowance because they commonly feel tighter at the same nominal diameter. The result is then matched to the nearest Indian size from 1 to 26. If the estimated target falls outside this table, the result is capped at the closest available size and clearly described as an estimate.
Professional sizing considers more than a single diameter. A jeweller can see whether your knuckle is substantially larger than the finger base, how the ring balances, whether the shank is round, and whether the design can safely be resized. ISO 8653:2016 describes ring-size measurement with defined ring sticks and finger gauge sets, which is a more controlled process than measuring free space while the ring is worn.
Spinning does not always mean the entire ring is too large. A large gemstone or decorative top can make a ring rotate because the top is heavier than the shank. Finger taper can also encourage rotation. In those cases, a small sizing bead, internal spring insert, alternative shank design or professional adjustment may solve the problem without reducing the nominal ring size as much as the gap alone suggests.
The visible geometry can be deceptive when a finger is oval or when the knuckle is wide. The ring might have side clearance but still press firmly against the top and bottom of the finger. For that reason, discomfort, persistent deep indentation, difficulty removing the ring and knuckle clearance should all be considered before changing size.
Treat the suggested size as a shortlist, not a purchase guarantee. Compare it with the Indian ring size chart, repeat the gap measurement at a different time of day, and if possible try the recommended size with a physical ring gauge. This is particularly important for expensive jewellery, wedding rings, engagement rings, wide bands and materials that cannot be resized easily.
