A ring size chart usually places several measurements next to one another: a local ring size number, an inner diameter, an inner circumference, and sometimes equivalent US, UK, EU or Japanese sizes. The most important thing is to know which measurement you actually have before matching it to the chart.
If you are measuring a ring you already own, the easiest figure to obtain is normally the inside diameter across the centre of the ring. If you are measuring your finger with paper, string or a flexible strip, you are measuring the finger circumference. These are related, but they are not the same number.

The straight-line distance across the inside of a ring, measured through the centre from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge.
The distance all the way around the inside of a ring or around the base of the finger where the ring will sit.
The most useful unit for ring sizing because small differences matter. One millimetre is far smaller than one inch.
An imperial unit often shown on US-oriented charts. One inch equals exactly 25.4 millimetres.
A ring that has an inside diameter of about 18.5 mm does not have an 18.5 mm circumference. Its circumference is roughly 58.1 mm. That difference is why copying the wrong column from a ring size chart can produce a completely incorrect size.
Think of diameter as the straight shortcut across a circle, while circumference is the full journey around it. Both describe the same ring opening, but from different directions.
Multiply the inside diameter by approximately 3.1416 to estimate the inside circumference.
Divide the circumference by approximately 3.1416 to estimate the ring's inside diameter.
Multiply inches by 25.4 for mm. Divide millimetres by 25.4 for inches.
If a chart lists an inner diameter of 0.709 inches, multiply 0.709 × 25.4. The result is about 18.0 mm. A diameter near 18.0 mm corresponds to an inside circumference near 56.5–57 mm depending on the exact chart and rounding convention.
Always compare the same measurement type. Do not compare a 0.709-inch diameter to a circumference column.

Small differences between jewellery brands and published charts are possible, so use the chart as a sizing reference rather than assuming every manufacturer uses identical tolerances.

This method is useful when you already have a ring that fits the intended finger comfortably.
Use a ring worn on the same finger and ideally the same hand.
Use a millimetre ruler or digital caliper for better precision.
Measure straight through the centre. Do not include the metal thickness.
Compare the result with the diameter in mm on your ring size chart.
This method is useful when you do not have a correctly fitting ring to copy.
Place it around the base of the finger with a comfortable, close fit.
The ring must pass over the knuckle without becoming painfully tight.
Mark where the strip completes one full circle around the finger.
That length is your approximate finger circumference.
Ring differences are small, so millimetres are easier to read and compare. A difference of only 0.3–0.5 mm in diameter can noticeably change fit.
If your ruler or source chart uses inches, record the value carefully and convert it to mm before comparing with an Indian ring size chart.
Keep at least two or three decimal places when converting inches, then round only when matching the final chart row.
16.2 ÷ 25.4 ≈ 0.638 inches. The corresponding circumference is roughly 50.9 mm.
58.1 ÷ π ≈ 18.5 mm diameter. That is the diameter value you would compare against an existing ring.
0.803 × 25.4 ≈ 20.4 mm. On the reference chart above, that sits around Indian size 24.
India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Japan do not all label the same ring opening with the same size number. A ring with one physical diameter may therefore be called one number in India, another number in the US and a letter in the UK.
The safest way to move between systems is to use a chart that includes a physical measurement such as diameter in mm or circumference in mm as the common reference. That is more reliable than assuming, for example, that “size 8” means the same thing everywhere.

Use the inner diameter. A rigid ring provides a stable circle and can be measured accurately with a ruler or caliper.
Use finger circumference. Measure snugly but not tightly, then compare the result with the circumference column.

Size labels differ between countries, but a physical measurement does not. A diameter of 18.5 mm remains 18.5 mm whether a jeweller ultimately labels the ring with an Indian number, a US number or a UK letter.
For that reason, keeping your original measurement in millimetres makes it much easier to compare charts, verify conversions and communicate with jewellers.
